The worry didn’t come from nowhere. In cats, a white coat paired with blue eyes really is linked to congenital deafness. The same pattern turns up in merle and piebald dogs. Anyone who has owned a white cat has heard this, and it travels straight over to rabbits the moment those blue eyes appear.

The instinct to ask is a good one. Please keep asking it, of every breeder you talk to.

What the Science Says

Here’s where most breeder websites go quiet, and where we’d rather just tell you.

There is published work connecting the Vienna gene to hearing loss. A review of Vienna White genetics in rabbits describes deafness as a frequent outcome in blue-eyed whites and points to a close relationship between the genes that limit melanin and the genes involved in hearing. That isn’t a rumor from a forum. It sits in the literature, it cites work going back to 1990, and the biology behind it holds up.

The mechanism matches what happens in cats. Melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment, also do a job in the inner ear. Restrict pigment far enough and hearing can go with it.

So this isn’t something somebody invented.

What Experienced Breeders Say

Now the other side, which deserves equal weight.

Breeders who have worked with the Vienna gene for decades report that they simply don’t see it. A widely shared article from the North American Lionhead Rabbit Club calls the deaf and blind association a leftover from heavy inbreeding during the early development of certain varieties, and considers it settled generations ago.

Show breeders tend to land somewhere sensible in between. The guidance that surfaces again and again is to pair a blue-eyed white with a Vienna-marked or shaded rabbit and never with another blue-eyed white, because doubling up is what raises the odds.

Here’s the part almost nobody mentions: hardly anyone has actually tested.

Why Nobody Really Knows

Hearing in animals gets confirmed with a BAER test, short for brainstem auditory evoked response. Small electrodes go under the skin of the scalp, tiny foam inserts go in the ears, a computer sends clicks through, and the equipment reads whether the brainstem responded. It takes ten or fifteen minutes and most animals tolerate it easily.

For dogs, this is routine. Dalmatian and merle breeders test whole litters, and results get filed with a national registry. That’s how those breeds built real data about which pairings produce deaf puppies.

Rabbits have nothing like it, for three reasons that stack on top of each other.

The equipment is built for other species. Every BAER program we can find serves dogs and cats. UC Davis runs a hearing clinic for dogs only. The University of Florida’s program is designed around puppies. One clinic won’t test cats until roughly six months because the ear insert is too large before then, and a Holland Lop’s ear canal is smaller than a cat’s. Add a lopped ear folded over the opening and the placement gets harder still.

It requires a specialist. BAER isn’t something a general practice offers. It means a veterinary neurologist or a specialty hospital, and then finding one comfortable working with a rabbit. Depending on where you live, that’s a long drive on top of everything else.

The cost multiplies fast. It’s a specialty appointment priced per animal. Testing one rabbit is an expense. Testing an entire litter, every litter, the way dog breeders do, is out of reach for essentially every rabbitry in the country.

There’s a limit worth knowing too. A BAER result tells you whether hearing is present or absent. It doesn’t tell you why, and it isn’t a diagnosis on its own.

So when one source calls deafness common and another calls it a myth, understand what’s happening. Both are working from observation rather than data. Almost nobody has run the test that would settle it.

The Technical Part

Fair warning, this section gets into the weeds.

Blue-eyed white lives at the V locus. A rabbit carrying two copies of the Vienna allele (vv) is a blue-eyed white, and that pair overrides every other color gene it owns. One copy (Vv) makes a Vienna carrier, sometimes wearing white markings and sometimes showing nothing at all.

Now run the pairings:

  • Blue-eyed white x blue-eyed white gives you 100% blue-eyed whites.
  • Blue-eyed white x Vienna marked gives you 50% blue-eyed whites and 50% carriers.

Here’s what deafness actually is in a white animal. Pigment cells begin as melanoblasts in the neural crest of the developing embryo, then migrate outward to four destinations: skin, hair, eyes, and a structure in the inner ear called the stria vascularis. That last one holds down an electrical job. It maintains the endocochlear potential, roughly +100 millivolts inside the cochlear duct, and that charge is what keeps the hair cells alive. The melanocytes are what generate it.

When too few melanoblasts finish the trip to the cochlea, the stria degenerates, the hair cells die off behind it, and the ear goes quiet. Often just one ear, which is a good part of why nobody notices.

So this isn’t a hearing gene misfiring. It is a pigment cell shortage in an organ that happens to need pigment cells to run a current.

And that is where the pairing starts to matter. More than 125 genes influence pigmentation, and over two dozen govern how melanoblasts migrate and survive. Whether a vv rabbit winds up with enough cells in its cochlea gets decided by all of that background, not by the V locus alone. You can see the evidence sitting in plain sight: two rabbits with the identical Vv genotype, one splashed with white markings and one showing nothing whatsoever. Same gene, different outcome, because the rest of the genome is voting.

When you pair two blue-eyed whites, you are pairing two rabbits chosen for the cleanest, whitest expression there is. That is selecting, indirectly, for the genetic background that lets the fewest pigment cells survive the journey. Doing this results in concentrating a genome that suppresses melanoblast migration. Some of those cells were meant to end up in the ear.

Pairing to a Vienna marked rabbit does the reverse. A pigmented patch is proof that melanoblasts got there and lived. Every time I use one, I am putting that back in.

Two more things stack on top. The blue-eyed white gene pool is small, so two of them in one barn are usually related, which drives up inbreeding and surfaces recessive problems that have nothing to do with color at all.

And if a line also carries English spotting or Dutch, those knock down pigment cell numbers on their own. Pile them onto vv and the shortage compounds. Dog breeders know this one as the double merle problem.

What WE do about it at Rhythm & Bleu

We can’t test our way to certainty. What we can do is breed as though the risk is real.

When we breed a blue-eyed white, we never pair it with another blue-eyed white.

Doubling up on blue-eyed white concentrates a great deal more than the color, for the reasons laid out just above. We adhere to ethical breeding standards in every possible realm, including this one.

We just don’t do it. Every pairing here is chosen to keep genetic distance between the parents for the health and wellness of every kit.

Plenty of owners never realize their rabbit doesn’t hear well until years down the road.
